CHANGING JOBS – THE MIX OF EMOTIONS UNCOVERED

Changing jobs can be incredibly stressful and it will bring out a mix of emotions and fears.  Let’s take a look at what some of those are and how you can manage these as you navigate your way through your job change journey.

Fear of the Unknown

The Fear:  the uncertainty about the new role, company culture, colleagues and job responsibilities can be daunting.

The Resolve:  research the new company, its culture, and the role you’re stepping into.  Reach out to your new manager or use online platforms like LinkedIn to gain some great insights into the organisation.

Financial Insecurities

The Fear:  Concerns about whether the new job will offer the same level of compensation and benefits you have experienced in previous roles.  Will it involve a pay cut initially and maybe the pay structure won’t align with what you were used to.

The Resolve:  Evaluate the financial aspects of the new job, including the package (base + super etc) and look at the potential for growth.  Create a budget to understand how any changes in income will impact your financial situation.

Imposter Syndrome

The Fear:  the feeling on being inadequate or unqualified for the new position, even though you have been hired because you have the necessary skills and experience.

The Resolve:  recognise your skills, accomplishments, and the value you bring to the role.  Remind yourself that you were chosen for the new role for a reason.

Moving out of your Comfort Zone

The Fear:  leaving a familiar environment of your current job, where you know the ins and outs, can be uncomfortable and confronting.

The Resolve:  embrace the opportunity for personal and professional growth that comes with stepping out of your comfort zone.  Focus on the excitement of learning new things and facing new challenges.

Fear of Failure

The Fear:  worrying about not meeting expectations in the new role or not being able to perform as well as expected.

The Resolve:  set realistic expectations for yourself and understand that it’s natural to experience a learning curve in a new job.  Seek support from mentors or colleagues to help you navigate any challenges.

Impact on Work/Life Balance

The Fear:  concerns about how the new job will affect your personal life, including commute time, workload and stress levels.

The Resolve:  priortise work/life balance and establish boundaries from the beginning.  Communicate with family/friends and get their support while you are establishing yourself in a new role.  It will also help to communicate to your employer that a healthy work/life balance is important.

Career Progression

The Fear:  doubts about whether the new job will offer better opportunities for career advancement or growth compared to the previous role.

The Resolve:  evaluate how the new job aligns with your long-term career goals and aspirations.  Consider the potential growth and advancement within the new organisation.

Relationships with Colleagues

The Fear:  not fitting in with new co-workers or missing the camaraderie and support of previous colleagues.

The Resolve:  approach new relationships with an open mind and a willingness to connect with others.  Participate in team activities and networking opportunities to build rapport with your new colleagues.

Regret

The Fear:  concerns about making the wrong decision and regretting leaving your previous role, especially when it was so stable and comfortable.

The Resolve:  trust in the decision that led you to pursue a new role.  Focus on the potential for growth and development that comes with making a change.

Starting Over

The Fear:  the idea of having to prove yourself again in a new environment and build up your reputation from scratch can be intimidating.

The Resolve:  view starting over as a change to reinvent yourself and showcase your skills in a new environment.  Embrace the opportunity to build new relationships and make a positive impact. 

By addressing your fears/concerns head-on and taking proactive steps to mitigate them, you will navigate your transition into the new role with confidence and clarity.
