Happy New Year and Happy New Employee!

Drive by Friday –

You service your vehicle, right?
Then service new employees to avoid losing them in the first 6 months…

I recently was reading an article that appeared on SEEK and thought I would share some information with you.

Recruiting the best people takes time, money, and considerable effort, but it pays off in the long run through the value that person brings to your business.

Developing a strong retention strategy is vital to avoid losing your new recruit within a matter of months – here are some ideas to encourage a longer-term commitment from new employees:

Provide a realistic job preview:

A first day can be overwhelming especially if you don’t know 100% what to expect.  Set the expectations at the job interview (good and bad) and reiterate those on day one so there are no hidden surprises.  We don’t want the employee to start to prepare an exit strategy in the first week.

Invest time in onboarding:

I can’t reiterate this enough.  Set the employee up with the basics to get started, make them feel welcome, introduce them to the company values and give them the tools they need to success.  Onboarding is also more than one day – it’s continual ongoing discussions and support.

Set clear expectations that you both agree on:

Employees and Hiring Managers should agree on what success looks like in the role – develop a plan and goals together, make it inclusive and work out how to support achieving those goals. Make performance part of the longer-term plan so that it shapes ongoing career development within the business.

Provide support and feedback:

Ongoing support and constructive feedback are always important in any level of position.  Recognition is important to people, so make sure that their hard work, input, and success is being noticed.   If you see the employee is struggling, have some open conversations around what it is you can do to support them.  Is it additional training or one-on-one coaching.? Your employee will thank you for the support and stay with you for the long term.

Offer valuable training from the outset:

Invest in the employee’s future from the outset.  You don’t always need a large training budget – much of it can be done on the job.  A lot of organisations adopt a 70:20:10 model for learning and development – 70% learning/practice on the job; 20% mentoring/coaching and 10% formal learning through courses.  Don’t let your new recruit walk out the door because there was no training strategy from day one.

AND EMPLOYEES – Let’s be committed and build a career effectively with your new EMPLOYER.

It takes both parties to create a conducive, fulfilling, and long-term working partnership.
