Job Interview Do’s and Dont’s

An interview is a two-person experience… Candidate and Interviewer

Isn’t it more likely that candidates will slip up, trip up and say something they shouldn’t in an interview?
Are they the only ones who make mistakes?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…

Recruiters, HR Mangers, and Hiring/People Managers are equally as guilty for driving full-steam ahead and are equally at fault for saying the wrong things when interviewing potential employees.

It may seem trivial but some of these things can put a candidate off joining your organisation.  When a candidate makes the effort to research, show-up and put their energy into the interview process,  give them the same courtesy back.  In saying that, Candidates are also known for not investing their time and can waste that of an Interviewer’s.

Here’s a few things that Interviewers should avoid saying:

“WE’LL FIGURE IT OUT AS WE GO ALONG…”
Candidates like to know what’s expected of them even if they are stepping into a newly created role.  If they do their homework, so should the Interviewer.  It will give the Candidate greater confidence in the job and company.

“LET ME JUST TAKE THIS CALL”
Candidates have switched off their phone (or should have) so give the Candidate the same courtesy and your undivided attention.

“I’M SO GLAD WE FIRED THE LAST IDIOT – I’M SURE YOU’LL DO MUCH BETTER”
Not the best way to demonstrate company values. Never bad mouth company employees that have exited the business.  It’s just not cool!

“DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE JOB DESCRIPTION”
Now is not the time to be figuring out what you need from a new team member.  Candidates base their application and interview preparation on the job advert/job description.  Be prepared and confident what you require for the role you are interviewing for.

“I FEEL LIKE IT WAS ONLY YESTERDAY WE HIRED THE LAST PERSON IN THIS ROLE”
If a position has a high turnover rate, perhaps investigate why, solve the problem, then hire someone new.  And divulging this problem to an outsider is perhaps one of the quickest ways to put a Candidate off accepting the job.

“EXCUSE THE MESS”
A tidy work environment sets a good impression.  Present the business in a professional and organised manner that everyone will respect and embrace.  The environment can say a lot.

“SORRY FOR BEING LATE”
Candidates know how busy Interviewers are.  Everyone is busy. If a Candidate can turn up on time from outside the building, then the Interviewer should be on time after walking down the corridor.  Value your time and that of the Candidate.

These are just a few examples – SURPRISE – it really does happen!

So, Candidates and Interviewers, let’s get it right and make it a great experience for all involved!
