REMOTE WORKING – LET’S TURN THE WHEELS ON THIS ONE…
SO, DO WE LOVE or NOT LOVE HYBRID WORKING ARRANGEMENTS?
As COVID hit, many businesses adopted remote (hybrid) working and now many organisations have implemented work settings and programs that support remote working. However, it isn’t for everyone, and we need to be mindful of that. Some people don’t perform well when left to their own devices and are not around others.
Hybrid working has been met with an array of negatives and positives – let’s look at a few of those…
Positives:
Provides an opportunity for people to operate in their own space and control a better work/life balance
Flexibility of taking your work with you to a new location and not being restricted to just your office or home environment (it’s like a mobile office)
No daily commute, cost, and time to get to the office
It has created many job opportunities for people living in rural areas and those living with disabilities
Overall job satisfaction and increased productivity
Negatives
It has created a social gap as employees meet and interact less
There is a fear of employees being isolated and not sure how to self-manage their work
It has been challenging for companies to sustain and build an effective work culture
A lack of face-to-face support and collaboration with Management and Colleagues
Companies have had to endure many business changes including organisational structures, technology infrastructure, and more
It has significantly affected diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace
There are many scenarios, responses could be added to this. If you are embracing the remote working culture, here’s a few ideas to manage that process:
Be clear on your goals and expectations, ensuring your team knows what is expected
Supply everyone with the necessary resources and tools to be productive and successful
Create a culture of effective communication through virtual resources
Measure and track progress
Set everyone goals and KPI’s that are required to be achieved so there is a focus
And importantly – STAY CONNECTED - set aside OFFICE DAYS v WORK FROM DAYS (specific days) whereby the team is all together, collaborating and enjoying time with their team-mates face to face. Those days in the office will be crucial to building a great culture.
There are many resources available to Companies and Individuals that relate to Remote Working.
