SPEAK THE SPEAK ‘GenZ’ WORKER STYLE

As we all know, trends come and go.  We use different vocabulary as trends soar and then disappear.  A high % of these trends are created and utilised significantly by GenZ workers (born between 1997 and 2012).  As the rulers of social media and technology, GenZ ushers in an entirely new vocabulary to the workplace.  A high percentage of GenZ workers rely on TikTok to get career advice and tips from all over the world which they utilise to negotiate for better salaries, working conditions and opportunities.  

A typical GenZer is a self-driver who deeply cares about others, strives for a diverse community, is highly collaborative and social, values flexibility, relevance, authenticity and non-hierarchical leadership.

Let’s take a look at some interesting catch phrases that are appearing in our workplace today – and predominately utilised by the GenZ fraternity:

Altered my brain chemistry

Something that made you rethink your life outlook.

Bare minimum mondays

Prioritizing self-care over work on Monday doing the minimum. 

Big yikes

Embarassing – ouch!  I accidentally sent an email meant for you to my boss.  ‘Big Yikes’

Boreout

The opposite of burnout – employees feel unchallenged and disengaged in their role.

Career cushioning

A backup plan in case someone loses their job.

Generative AI (GenAI)

AI systems that create new content – GenAI is revolutionising many industries by automating processes. 

Lazy girl job

High-salaried job with minimal responsibility or stress.

Loud quitting

A dramatic or attention-grabbing way of resigning from a job – often done publicly or unconventionally.

Quiet quitting

Doing the bare minimum in your role.

Rage applying

The act of applying for multiple jobs in a short period out of frustration and dissatisfaction with one’s current job.

RTO (return to office)

The transition from remote work back to physical office spaces – organisations are navigating the challenges of hybrid work models to employee preferences.

Workplace wellness

A company’s efforts to maintain physical and emotional wellness with their employees.
